THE SKYLIGHT CAVE

This dive has become a firm favourite with regular visitors to Albatros Diving. It’s found at the bottom of steep cliffs near the village of Canyamel. As you swim into the wide entrance expecting a dark cave, you see a column of sunlight striking the floor, lighting up fish and other creatures in its path. The light is coming from a hole in the ceiling, and on a clear day is so bright you won´t need a torch! Its an ideal opportunity for underwater photographers, as they try to catch the elusive play of sunlight and shadows. Past the column of light and thirty metres into the back of the cave on the left we come to a small, dark passageway which curves upwards. Just at the apex of the curve theres a small hole where a friendly conger eel lives; if you´re lucky he may come out to say hello. After this short passageway you´ll find daylight hitting your eyes again, and you surface into the second, ‘upstairs’ chamber. It’s directly above the first one, with a hole in the ceiling which lets in the sun that shines through a hole in the floor straight down to the bottom chamber! We usually stop here for a moment to admire the cave and talk about the dive. The exit is immediately ahead of you.
The Skylight Cave is a perfect dive for people who haven´t dived in caves before. It has all the ingredients of a ‘real’ cave, but is actually very safe because it is light and you can always see your way out. Theres no sediment either, which means visibility is always good. And because it’s so shallow, you´ll have enough air left to explore some of the area outside before returning to the boat.
