Excursion to Sa Calobra, Torrent de Pareis (Mallorca)

La Calobra is mouth of the "Torent de Pareis", one of the most beautiful landscapes to be found in Majorca, the water in La Calobra is characteristic for its intense shade of blue, we can reach it three different ways.

By means of a cruise ship which leaves from Soller Port twice a day, going along beside the beautiful cliffs on the north coast of the island, making this an appetising trip where we can relax and enjoy a day of sunshine, sea and wonderful picturesque views.Timetable: Means of transport in La Tramuntana.

The second possibility is to go by car along the winding roads which can be found along the road from Pollença to Soller (12Km) passing alongside the Lluc monastery (a place of almost obligatory pilgrimage for the inhabitants of the island), then we will go along the road which is known as the 'nudo de la corbata' (tie knot), giving way to an intriguing descent for steering wheel fans everywhere. If you want to rent a car, visit our web section about Car rental.

The third possibility, for the most adventurous of us, is to go down into the Torrent at Escorca, starting at the Lluc Monastery, along the very innards of the Torrent and enjoying the wonderful views which the excursion gives to the hiker thanks to its sharp cliffs.    To go along the Torrent in its entirety, we must begin the trip at Escorca, situated next to the main road, one of the recommendations is to have a general look from the main viewpoint as it offers an abrupt image of the cleft hewn into the mountains by water erosion.

The name "Pareis", means the end of the journey, at this point all the water collected by the different torrents comes together and concludes at the point called the 'l’entreforc' (the fork), one of the most beautiful views to be found on this trip along the innards of the Torrent de Pareis, towering cliffs, and a vegetation which because of the orographic and climatological characteristics, constitutes a privileged place regarding the flora, with over 300 different species observed so far, of which 105 are totally endemic.

Regarding the fauna in the area, there is also a good representation, like the water snake, the "ferreret", etc… among other reptiles and amphibians. When it comes to birds, we can enjoy the wild doves, the 'cabot', the 'verderol',etc...

When we begin the descent along the route carved out by the Torrent de Pareis we can observe the 'penyes de Son Nebot' (Son Nebot rocks), the ‘Cals Reis’ (Houses of the kings), the 'Penya foradada' (The bored rock, or holed rock), a mediterranean copse is depicted in front of us by all this, until we reach the stream bed that is created by the very Torrent called 'de’l Burgar', we will be able to see the ‘Puig Roig’, the ‘Cosconar’ and the 'quarter de carabiners' (Police barracks)

When we arrive at the 'l’Entreforc', the place where the ‘Torrent de Lluc’ (or d’Albarca) and the ‘Torrent del Gorg Blau’ (Blue gorge torrent) meet up. At this point it is now only 180m above sea level compared to the 630m at the beginning of the journey. At this point the two Torrents flow into one stream of water, the Torrent de Pareis.

From this point we can enjoy a series of privileged views created by water erosion, creating a curious landscape, this erosion is caused by the flow of water which falls with a great force giving us a kind of bowl or receptacle that holds water during most of the year when water does not flow along the Torrent at all. In summer we will find the Torrent in a very dry state, even though we can observe evidence of the difference in water levels mentioned previously.

Following the course of the Torrent we arrive at ‘La Calobra’, to get to the port (where we can catch a boat back to Soller Port ), we must take the 'carrer nou' (new road), the only entrance being a small tunnel for people on foot. We can enjoy a refreshing and well deserved swim in the crystal clear waters at La Calobra, see the end of the Torrent and lose sight on the horizon.Lastly, We must mention the large rock which sticks out into the sea called 'Morro de sa Vaca' (The snout of the cow), which on its cliff side possess a large colony of falcons.

For the lucky few that arrive on the right day in summer, choir concerts, which are improved enormously by the spectacular setting, can be enjoyed, the acoustics of the place allows the music to reduce the tiredness caused by the descent to La Calobra.
