"La Residencia": hotel par excellence (Dei - Mallorca)

It is a beautiful hotel, set in dreamlike surroundings; the village of Dei, part of and surrounded by some of the most beautiful Mediterranean spots to be found in these seas. The village of Dei is on the mountainside with sea views, an intensely blue sea which contrasts with the ochre coloured mountains, the green of the olive groves and the white blinds through which the sea breezes play with the white curtains at sunset.

The architecture of the Residencia blends in completely with its rural surroundings as well as adapting to the terrace gardens which the municipality of Dei is built on. There are 30 terraces which the hotel cares for and pampers to the slightest detail so as to maintain the beauty of the surroundings. They used to be used for growing crops but nowadays the hotel takes advantage of the surroundings with its orange and lemon trees and beautiful terraces with beautiful sea views. Peaceful enough to be able to enjoy reading in the open air, to enjoy the solarium, etc.

The Residencia, belongs to the Orient-Express Hotel chain and is made up of various old buildings which have been rehabilitated and interconnected. It has been restored so as to create a top class elegant hotel. They are ancestral buildings which date back to the 16th and 17th centuries which have been restored with the utmost care, a place where world famous people such as Pierce Brosnan, the late Princess Diana, etc., come to stay. Its clever decoration gives it a sophisticated Mediterranean ambience. Its creation has managed to maintain the uniformity of its old character, it has also managed to maintain intact the different materials and elements which make up the rustic island style: the wooden beamed ceilings, the baked clay floor tiles, the tiling in the bathrooms as well as an endless list of other small decorative details which include architectural and furniture details from the island of Majorca. Its painting collection includes more than 400 works of art by local painters.

The ideal of this hotel is based on, above all, the idea of being enjoyed by the tourist, rewarding the tourist on their stay with the beauty of the surroundings which alone are excellent, as well as a hotel service of the highest quality and sophistication. There are only 46 bedrooms, some with their own swimming pools. This refined hotel establishment where the biggest luxury is tranquillity during the stay, also has a highly experienced management team which has brought its restaurant "El olivo" the Michelin star three years in a row. The village of Dei is, on its own, an impressive natural beauty spot for one of the most internationally well known hotels. The village was home to Robert Graves and was also the residence of a large number of writers, internationally famous artists and both musicians and intellectuals. The village offers spectacular views of both the sea and the mountains. The 'Residencia also enjoys these views and visitors can rest and really feel that they are miles away from the stress caused by life in the cities.

The readers of the Cond Nast Traveller magazine voted on their favourite hotels all over the world. Position N 51 is occupied La Residencia, in Dei (Majorca). A hotel by the sea, enormously comfortable and with very tasteful decor.

Apart from your stay at The 'Residencia', the village of Dei is a town which allows us to get to know great natural beauties in its surrounding areas. This Majorcan town is located in the north-western part of the island and borders on the villages of Bunyola, Valldemossa, Sller and on the sea. The terrain is quite rough reaching a maximum height of 1064 m (Puig del Teix). It has 5 km of coastline from which Cala de Dei, and Es Cuc are both well worth a visit.

Its economy used to be based on agriculture, something which can be noted in the atmosphere, until the arrival of tourism, this now being both the village's and the island's main form of income. Dry-farmed crops predominate, above all olives, carob beans and citrus fruits such as oranges and tangerines.

Up until the 60's agriculture went hand in hand with smuggling through the seafaring area around Dei cove which allowed the entry of very scarce products on the island such as Cuban tobacco, coffee, etc. Nowadays, the cove retains its traditional fishing trade.

The leather glove factory in Can Rovira was the main industrial activity until it disappeared in 1970. At the present time, the economic activity is centred around the spring water bottling plant at Sa Senyora de Ca lAbat spring; and in the tourist sector aimed mainly towards the upper end of the market such as The 'Residencia', among others.

It could be said about Dei, that its greatest advertisement is the large amount of illustrious people who have passed through it. One of the most illustrious is the English writer Robert Graves and another the American archaeologist William Waldren. Artists such as Arthur Byne, Lady Shepard, Joaquim Mir, Ulrich Leman, John Ulbritch, Mark Heine, Joan Bibiloni, Mike Olfield, Kevin Ayers, Richard Branson, members of the bands The mama's and the papa's and The Animals, Lady Di, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Douglas and Catherine Z-Jones, among a long list of others ....who have been and are still among its main inhabitants.

One place to see is, curiously, the cemetery. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world, the writer Robert Graves' tomb is among the most noteworthy.
