Es Baluard, the new art gallery.

Other eras left cathedrals and palaces to posterity, modern times will leave museums. New buildings destined for this function are opened continually in cities all over the world. A large part of these museums hope to become a source of pride for the citizens and a tourist symbol. There are still some doubts as to the artistic content of the permanent exhibition at this new museum in Town whose director ,in this moment, will be Teresa Pérez Jofre.

The only thing which is known about the opening is that it will be titled ‘Es Baluard any 0’ (Es Baluard year 0) and there will be a trip through Twentieth Century art through the art gallery's own collection which comes primarily from the 'Art Serra' (Grup Serra) private collection and with pieces donated for the exhibition by the Palma Town Hall, the Balearic Government and the Majorca Island Council, the highest governmental institutions on the island who have financed the cost of the work with 17·5 million Euros, about 2,900 million Pesetas. The investment/aid has been high because it is hoped that it will become a symbol of the city, the island of Majorca and the Balearic islands. Nevertheless the building has been let to the Art Serra Foundation free of charge for the next 99 years.

In addition, this dungeon is making its debut by housing the Rebecca Horn exhibition titled ‘Llum atrapada al ventre d’una balena – Light imprisoned in the belly of the whale’, created using light and sound projected all over the space. On the other hand, there is another important event, pieces donated for the exhibition by the Majorca Island Council which include paintings by Anckerman, Blanes Viale, Fuster Valiente, Junyer Vidal, De Labra Suzo, Montaner de Sureda, Puget Viñas, Médard Vergurgh and Fuster Bonnín among others.

The international press has already made mention of the museum, which they define as a boost to the island as a cultural destination, and as a gift for the island. The British press spread the news defining Majorca as a tourist and cultural destination, pointing out the importance of the museum which is to be officially opened by their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain on the 30th January 2004.

Art Critics have also spoken about the building's magnificent location (in the centre of Palma, next to the old city wall which has recently been restored, with views over Palma Bay) such as Ramírez de Lucas, expert on paintings and architecture, points out that Es Baluard is ‘A gift for the island of Majorca’ and he states that it is fantastic, its content is in line with building and he points out the importance the natural light which bathes the museum giving it a 100% Mediterranean culture air.

Now people will not only come to visit the Es Baluard museum, they will just whet their tourist appetite, they can also see the Opera and Ballet seasons, among many other cultural events like temporary exhibitions or visiting the old city, art galleries, etc...or the island itself, will whet this apetite for sea tasting culture. Just visiting the location of the Es Baluard museum we will be stepping back into the history of the city of Palma de Majorca through its walls, we will discover its streets, the architecture of the Saint Peter Bastions all with their views over Palma Bay.

The new Es Baluard museum is debating an entrance fee of 6 Euros, placing it above El Prado museum, The Queen Sofía art gallery, The IVAM in Valencia, Pilar and Joan Miró foundation de Barcelona or the Artium in Vitoria.

The entrance fees for the Es Baluard museum, make it one of the most expensive museums in Spain, only the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao or the MACBA in Barcelona or the recently opened Picasso museum in Málaga have entrance fees above 6 Euros.

Among other details, the Majorcan designer, Miquel Adrover, well known internationally, has designed the uniforms which will be worn by the staff of Palma's Es Baluard museum. According to the designer they are characterised for following a classical, ethnical, simple line fully respecting Majorcan Tradition.

This is all added to the beauty of the location of the Es Balluard museum to once again give yet another chance and another excuse to get to know the Balearic Islands.
