Miquel Barceló, the living artist more valued

Miquel Barceló (Felanitx, Mallorca 1957) is the living artist more valued nowadays. In a journey to Paris in 1970 found out “art brut” that influences a lot in his first works. His successful career starts in the 80’s participating in the “Bienal” of Sao Paolo, Brasil and the “Documenta” in Kassel, Germany.

In 1986 the Majorcan painter was honored with the Spanish national visual arts prize. In 1988 he set up their studio in Mali while their works started to be exhibit in the most important museums and galleries all over the world. Mali’s light is similar to the Mediterranean that is also presents in his works. In 2003 he was honored with the Art prize of Principe de Asturias Awards.

The following year his works were exhibited in Louvre museum being the first living artist in the famous French museum. In 2010 La Caixa Fundation exhibited in Madrid and Barcelona a retrospective of 25 years of works. Nowadays live among Paris, Mallorca and Mali.

In his works there are influences of Joan Miro and Tapies as well as Mediterranean and African from Mali. The Majorcan artist also illustrates books and writes the prologues of the brochures of his own exhibitions. Among his more recent works there are the refurbishment of a chapel of Palma Cathedral and the decoration of the dome from room XX of headquarters of UN in Geneve.

Recently, in June 2011 the auction house from London Christie's has sold one of his painting for more than 4,4 millions €, the highest price paid ever for the work a living artist. The painting named “Faena de Muletas” was painted in 1990. The works represents an aerial view of bullfighting ring and belongs to a collection about this typical Spanish theme.
