Sa Marxa Des Guell a Lluc Peu

Sa Marxa des Gell a Lluc a Peu (Walking from Bar Gell to Lluc Sanctuary) is a classical summer activity in Majorca. The origins of the walking were in 1974 when in summer to Tolo Gells daughter, bar owner and starter of the walking, a seltzer bottle exploded in her hands. Luckily the child was no injured and one of the costumers considered as a miracle. He suggest go (peregrinate on foot) to Lluc to thanks it to Our Lady.

Climb up to Lluc is a practice very popular in Majorca due to religious reasons, to make promises or thanks giving for any event or situation. Then, Tolo Gell and a group of people on 18th July 1974 walked to Lluc to thanksgiving for his daughter and from this year the walking is repeated as a social and non-competitive sportive event. In the first walking 30 people took part but every year is increased the number of people. Not only people of Majorca, also People of Spain and overseas. Nowadays 15,000 people every first Saturday of August climb up to Lluc and it is a must of Majorcan summer.

The distance from Palma to Lluc is 48km with an elevation of 500m and the route includes the villages of Marratxi, Santa Maria, Consell, Binissalem, Lloseta, Biniamar, Selva, Caimari, Escorca and Lluc. It is no so difficult but a minimum physical condition is recommended days before the walking. During the foot march, organization prepares refreshment and assistance points for walkers. The activity starts at 23h from Plaza Gell where was the site of Bar Gell and finish at Lluc between 7h and 10h of the following day.
