Traveling to Menorca

By Santiago Fabré de Balanzó

An unclear light, crystal-clear, shines on the fields. The island, Menorca, begins a new day. I am on the mountain Toro. From this viewing point, I can observe the whole island. In the east, the sun is blending me. In the north, her reflection converts the waters of Port de Fornells into silver. In the south and west, a line of green sprinkled mountains forms the landscape; an island of dreams is under my feet.

Yesterday, I arrived on the island with Mar, from Palma, to spend an extended weekend here. On the airport, we rent a car with Ritmocars, who have a grand range of vehicles - from small ones, over 4-wheel drives, over family cars, to the most luxury cars – and we drove to a beach hotel on Menorca, where we will spend the following three days. Strolling around, reading, eating… a relaxing weekend to get away from the daily stress at home. I left my roman at home and now, I have to forget it. And what is better than traveling to Menorca?

The island is fantastic at any time, I know it very well. On those days, I will show it to Mar. I organized a simple tour, which enables us to grab the beauty of it. Today, we got up early and went to the mountain Toro. Our plan for the following 3 days is the following:

First day: Views from the Monte Toro at early hour; visit of the village Es Mercadal, which is, together with Alaior and Ferreries, one of the three villages in the interior of the island (buy cheese!); later on, eating a fish ragout of crayfish in the port of de Fornells and in the afternoon a small walk to the Cap de Cavallería.

Second day: Visit of the city of Mao, the capital of the island. A beautiful city in the Mediterranean Sea. The idea is to stroll around, to drink a coffee in el Colón, to visit the fish market and, if we are happy, to listen to a concert of the organ in the cathedral. In the evening, we will eat some red prawns with a good white wine in the restaurant Miramar de Cales Fonts in the village of Es Castell.

Third day (as we cannot do everything, we leave some things to keep the dream of coming back): today, we will make a little excursion in the south of the island. We will go to Macarella and Macarelleta. We start in the bay Galdana, from where starts a good signposted walk that includes a distance with a wooden footbridge, which enables us to stroll around under the trunks of the pine trees, which are leading us to the beach of Macarella; later, a path over rocks leads us to Macarelleta… and we are laying down on the beach of sand, where we try to read the book which we did not care about until now.
